FRED SANDBACK & PROYECTOS MONCLOVA
Above: A Fred Sandback sculpture in front of a monotone wall as featured in Days No.2
To commemorate the book “The Properties of Light. Luis Barragán-Fred Sandback”, Mexico City’s Proyectos Monclova gallery presented Fred Sandback’s sculptures in front of stark color blocked walls. The effect of the fine, light installations against the punchy, massive color is truly remarkable. A testament of the power of contrast and a proof how much can be done with very little, this manual concept delivers an almost virtual experience.
Fred Sandback studied sculpture at the Yale School of Art in 1969 where his instructors included Donald Judd and Robert Morris. Of his work he said that he aimed “to be able to make sculpture that didn't have an inside” and he emphasized the importance of the viewer’s movement around them as something that one needed to experience actively. He his currently represented by David Zwirner NY and part of Dia Beacon’s permanent collection.
