FEMME CINEMA
Highlighting the important work of women film auteurs
‘L’animale’ by Katharina Mückstein, 2018
According to a recent study by The Celluloid Ceiling, women comprised only 20 percent of all directors, writers, producers, and editors working on the top 100 US grossing films of 2019. The films highlighted here deal with the role of women inside a society designed by men and therefore reflect the challenges of the storyteller inside the story. Inspired by the work of Barbara Loden, the politically charged films by Margarethe von Trotta and the sharp-edged poetry of Marguerite Duras, several modern directors such as Katharina Mückstein, Karyn Kusama and Lisa Joy are now taking bold next steps.
